A webinar presented by the IBA Mediation Committee and supported by the Sports Law Subcommittee of the Leisure Industries Section

International sport has a highly developed system of dispute resolution but has traditionally relied almost exclusively on arbitration.

Even though many sports tribunals have mediation rules and rosters in place, these are rarely utilised. In recent years however, increased attention has been given to the potential uses of mediation in resolving sports disputes, ranging from commercial and contractual matters to disciplinary and eligibility matters that lie within the self-governing authority of sporting federations.

The establishment of Mediation Guidelines for FIFA’s Football Tribunal and the further development of mediation at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) are particularly notable. This webinar aims to explore these and other developments and to consider the future role of mediation in the sports sector.
