A webinar presented by the IBA LGBTQI+ Law Committee and the IBA European Regional Forum, supported by the IBA Human Rights Law Committee and the IBA Rule of Law Forum
This webinar will explore strategies to combat human rights backsliding, with a particular focus on the challenges faced by LGBTQI+ communities and the ongoing rule of law crisis. Taking a transatlantic perspective, the discussion will cover developments in both the United States and Europe — including the impact of executive orders issued during the Trump administration targeting LGBTQI+ rights, and recent legislative and judicial trends across Europe.
The webinar will examine:
• the challenges of restoring judicial independence, democratic governance and LGBTQI+ rights, and the lessons learned from Poland;
• efforts by European institutions to reverse the decline in the rule of law;
• recent US policy decisions under the Trump administration affecting the judiciary and LGBTQI+ rights;
• the role of transatlantic collaboration in advancing democratic reforms and protecting human rights; and
• strategies for Europe and the global community to counter the spread of anti-democratic and anti-diversity policies.
