A webinar presented by the IBA Human Rights Institute and the IBA Human Rights Law Committee
The International Bar Association’s Human Rights Institute and the Syrian Legal Development Programme invite you to join this webinar, ‘Judicial independence as the key cornerstone for Syria’s democratic transition: how to address the risk of capture and ensure fair administration of justice, impartiality and accountability’.
This webinar will explore the critical role of judicial independence in Syria's political transition toward democracy, accountability and equality before the law. Bringing together Syrian lawyers, judges and legal practitioners, the discussion will examine the findings and recommendations of the recent report of the UN Special Rapporteur on the Independence of Judges and Lawyers on judicial appointments, which highlights international standards and good practices for safeguarding judicial independence and preventing undue influence over the judiciary.
The webinar will touch on the following key issues:
- independence and impartiality in the administration of justice to ensure public confidence in the law;
- Institutional safeguards for judicial independence, and the challenges and gaps within Syria's current legal framework; and
- effective administration of justice to ensure accountability and equality before the law, including in response to human rights abuses committed since the beginning of the transition;
In particular, the webinar will focus on the risks of 'capture of courts' in Syria, its impact on the transition and broader accountability processes and practical measures to address it. Simultaneous interpretation will be provided in English and Arabic to facilitate broad participation and engagement.
