Matthew Zimmerman
Biography
Matt Zimmerman is the General Counsel for both the Filecoin Foundation -- an independent organization that facilitates governance of the Filecoin network, funds critical development projects, supports the growth of the Filecoin ecosystem, and advocates for Filecoin and the decentralized web – and the Filecoin Foundation for the Decentralized Web -- a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization committed to preserving humanity’s most important information by fostering the development of open-source software and open protocols. He leads the legal function for both organizations, supporting efforts to grow an open ecosystem for decentralized storage and give developers an open and sustainable platform to build, enhance, and monetize those services. Matt was previously Associate General Counsel for Airbnb, leading the legal function for the global rollout and expansion of the Experiences business unit and, before that, serving as the company’s first dedicated lawyer supporting the Airbnb public policy team, working on legislation, litigation, data privacy, regulatory reform and compliance, product implementation, and platform issues. Prior to joining Airbnb, Matt was Senior Product Counsel at Twitter, representing a range of product clients on free expression, privacy, intellectual property, transparency, and regulatory and compliance matters. Before Twitter, Matt spent nearly a decade as Senior Staff Attorney at the Electronic Frontier Foundation, litigating and advocating for legislative and regulatory reform in matters involving anonymous speech rights, speech restrictions in the national security context, privacy, copyright and trademark fair use, intermediary liability, digital searches and seizures, anti-hacking statutes, and government and election transparency.
