Pinky Anand

Biography

Dr. Pinky Anand is a designated Senior Advocate at the Supreme Court of India with a distinguished practice of over 4 decades in various diverse areas. She has held the prominent position of the Additional Solicitor General of India in the Supreme Court of India for an illustrious two terms from 2014 to 2020 and has been the second woman in India to have had held this honour. A Doctorate of Law, graduate of Harvard Law School and an Inlaks scholar, Dr Anand is recipient of French National Order of Merit by President of the French Republic. At present practising in India, she has championed and fought numerous cases leading to landmark judgments in various laws. As an expert in Indian law, Ms Anand has been at the helm of several landmark cases. She has represented the Union of India as a law officer and has been involved in some of he most important judgments to have come out in recent years in the field of constitutional law including the decriminalisation of adultery and homosexuality. The criminalisation of Triple Talaq and changes in the Domestic Violence Act. She has been extensively involved in Arbitration and represented India in the Agusta Westland arbitration. Some of the more famous cases led by Ms. Anand are: Hindustan Construction Company Vs Union of India regarding automatic stay orders under the Arbitration and Conciliation Act, Constitutional right of freedom and expression for the South Indian Actress Khushboo where the Supreme Court upheld fundamental rights of speech in a path breaking judgment; V. Ravi Chandran vs. Union of India where she ensured the return of an American child to New York State though India is not a signatory to the Hague convention and Stephanie Joan Becker Vs State where the Supreme Court directed that if adoption is in the best interest of the child, there should not be any hindrance and the child is now growing up in Washington. She is an erudite speaker and writer and is extremely proactive in social welfare issues championing issues relating to women and child development, Constitutional interpretation and various others at national and international conferences. She is the Chairman ADR Committee for LAWASIA. She is the governing body member for the Indian Council of Arbitration and has represented various PSU’s in the Courts as well as in Arbitrations. She has garnered several awards for excellence in law to her credit including Amity University, Women Achievers Award. She is country councillor Law Asia and Vice President of the Bar Association of India. She is member of group of experts for Commonwealth for Drafting Model Law on Cyber Crime. She has authored the Indian chapter on Family Law jurisdictional comparisons published by Sweet and Maxwell and has been instrumental in bringing forth several legislations protecting women from sexual harassment and cyber crime.
