Biography

BIO : FUNKE ADEKOYA, SAN ‘Funke Adekoya is a Senior Advocate of Nigeria who practices as an independent arbitrator and litigator in Lagos, Nigeria, having retired in 2022 from AELEX, the law firm which she co-founded. She is actively engaged in international arbitration as a Chartered Arbitrator of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators [CIArb], a Governing Board Member of the International Council for Commercial Arbitration [ICCA], a Court Member of the Singapore International Arbitration Centre [SIAC] and most recently as a member of the Expert Committee of the China International Commercial Court [CICC]. She is ranked in Chambers Global and Who’s Who Legal as a Thought Leader in Arbitration and listed in Mute Off Thursdays Compendium of Unicorns – A Global Guide to Women Arbitrators. In addition, she is listed on the Chairman’s Panel of Arbitrators at ICSID and the panels of many other international arbitration institutions and is currently a member of the ICC Africa Commission. She has been appointed arbitrator [chair, wing or sole] in high-value institutional proceedings under the LCIA, ICC and ICSID Arbitration Rules and ad hoc arbitration proceedings under the UNCITRAL Rules. Her primary focus is on energy and construction disputes, in addition to other commercial and investment-based disputes. In 2020 she received the Arbitrator/ADR Practitioner of the Year Award from the African Arbitration Association (AfAA) and in 2022 was listed by the Africa Arbitration Academy on its Africa's 20 Arbitration Powerlist 2022, “established to celebrate the achievements of leading African arbitration practitioners and recognize their contributions to the development of arbitration in the continent.” She is dual-qualified; in Nigeria and as a solicitor in England and Wales.
