An award-winning trailblazer, Harvard University Advanced Leadership Initiative Senior Fellow Karen Clopton is a champion of human and civil rights, a distinguished attorney and academic, environmental sustainability and social justice expert, elected three terms as Chair of the San Francisco Human Rights Commission, and past Chief of Operations for the San Francisco State University Foundation and the Port of San Francisco. Serving in executive leadership and board roles for highly regulated public, private, academic, and non-profit organizations, she oversees policy, ethics, finance, operations, complex domestic and global compliance, labor and employment law, diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives, fund development, and human resource risk management. Nationally recognized as a civic leader and humanitarian by the American Bar Association, the United Nations Association, and the Junior State of America, her vision and expertise change laws, create programs, and positively impact the bottom line. As the California Public Utilities Commission’s former Chief Administrative Law Judge for a decade, she brings gravitas as a neutral and unbiased fact finder. She is also an accomplished lecturer, author, and keynote speaker.
