Biography

JUSTICE NENE AMEGATCHER was called to the Ghana Bar in 1980. He holds a Master of Laws Degree in Advanced Litigation and Dispute Resolution from Nottingham Trent Law School, UK. He practised law from 1980 and rose to Managing Partner of the law firm Sam Okudzeto & Associates. He also served as an adjunct lecturer in ADR, Advocacy, and Legal Ethics at the Ghana School of Law in Accra from 1994 to 2018. Justice Amegatcher is a Past President of the Ghana Bar Association. He has also chaired the African Regional Forum of the International Bar Association, Hub chair of the African Region for the Commonwealth Lawyers Association, and chair of the Advisory Council of the College of Humanities at the University of Ghana, Legon. Justice Amegatcher once represented Ghana on the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) Court of Arbitration in Paris. He has also been a member of the Judicial Council and General Legal Council. Nene has lectured in Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR), Advocacy and Legal Ethics at the Ghana School of Law, Accra, for over a decade and also served as a resource person in training Judges, Lawyers, traditional authorities, and other key stakeholders in ADR in Ghana, Nigeria, Senegal, and The Gambia. He has presented several papers at Conferences in Ghana, the United States, Papua New Guinea, Senegal, The Gambia, and South Africa. He has also served as a consultant to the World Bank, developing an ADR manual for The Gambia and a manual on strengthening the adjudicatory capacity of traditional authorities to improve access to justice. In 2018, Justice Amegatcher was nominated by the Judicial Council for approval by the President of Ghana, the Council of State, and Parliament to sit on the Supreme Court of Ghana. He was sworn into office as a Justice of the Supreme Court in October 2018 and retired on 31 July 2023. Justice Amegatcher currently serves as a sole arbitrator and panel member in domestic and international arbitrations. ARBITRATION EXPERIENCE: Have chaired the litigation team of the law firm of Sam Okudzeto & Associates for about 25 years, where I appeared as counsel in several cases before the High Court, Court of Appeal, and the Supreme Court before my elevation to the Supreme Court of Ghana in 2018. Have trained judges and key stakeholders in Arbitration and ADR in some countries in West Africa, and taught Arbitration and ADR at the Ghana School of Law for 15 years. Have acted as counsel, sole arbitrator, member, and Chairman of Panel in several ad-hoc, institutional, domestic, and a few international arbitrations within and outside Ghana.
