Sebastian Theis

Biography

Dr. Sebastian Theis is a conservation biologist with a multidisciplinary background spanning aquatic ecology, fisheries science, and geoscience. He earned his PhD in Conservation Biology from the University of Alberta, Canada, where his research focused on offsetting harmful anthropogenic impacts through habitat banking, mitigation credits and enhancement strategies in northern boreal lake systems. He also holds an MSc in Fisheries Science and Aquaculture from Humboldt University of Berlin, and a BSc in Geology and Paleontology from the University of Greifswald. Sebastian recently completed a postdoctoral position with the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority and University of Toronto, where he evaluated long-term aquatic habitat restoration efforts along the Toronto waterfront. He has also worked with Fisheries and Oceans Canada as an independent contractor, contributing to risk evaluation in offset projects and nature finance mechanisms. He is currently working on essential variables and indicators for ecosystem service monitoring with GEO BON as part of the Gonzalez Lab at McGill University in Montreal.
