Alexander Gay

Biography

Alexander Gay serves as General Counsel at the Department of Justice, where he leads a diverse civil litigation practice with a focus on commercial and trade disputes. Recognized as a foremost expert in commercial arbitration, he brings insight and experience to this specialized field. Mr. Gay has appeared before every level of court in Ontario, Alberta, and British Columbia, as well as the Supreme Court of Canada. His legal practice encompasses trials, arbitrations, mediations, and appearances before regulatory bodies and tribunals. He has also represented senior officials within the Government of Canada, including Deputy Ministers and Cabinet Ministers. He was well over 250 reported cases to his credit. In addition to his legal practice, Mr. Gay is an adjunct professor at the University of Ottawa’s Faculty of Law, where he teaches civil procedure and commercial arbitration. He is the author of several authoritative books on commercial arbitration and has contributed extensively to legal scholarship through chapters and articles on a broad range of topics. Mr. Gay is a member of the Law Society of British Columbia, the Law Society of Ontario, and The Advocates’ Society. He is fluent in English, French, and Spanish.
