Aseem Chawla

Biography

Aseem Chawla is Member of Bar Council of India, and Fellow Chartered Accountant and Certificate Holder of Comparative Tax Policy & Administration from Harvard Kennedy School & of Double Tax Treaties Certificate from Vienna University of Economic & Business. Aseem consistently represents clients in intricate tax litigation matters before various Appellate Fora. He has over two decades of focussed experience in Taxation (direct & indirect), including international tax and representation & litigation practice, corporate & business advisory, exchange control regulatory, transfer pricing and white-collar & money laundering/economic offences legislation. He has been advising large corporate houses on a variety of tax matters including cross border investment structuring. He consistently represents clients in intricate tax litigation matters before various appellate forums. He is an accredited Trust & Estate Practitioner and Member of Society of Trust & Estate Practitioners (STEP), U.K. Aseem is well regarded for estate planning, inheritance, private client & family governance matters, trusts & private clients for national and international clients, high net-worth individuals & trustees, and financial institutions. Aseem has been serving on several professional bodies, committees, board(s) of large business houses, leading families and charities, assisting them on the aspects of good governance, best practices, financial & legal oversight. Aseem is the outgoing Secretary of the Taxes Committee of the International Bar Association (IBA) and is member of its India Working Group (IWG). He is the Vice-Chair of the South Asia/ Oceania and India Committee, Section of International Law (ABA). Further, he has also been appointed as the Vice Chair of the International Private Client Committee of the ABA International Law Section. Aseem is regularly invited at various domestic and international tax forums and contributes articles to a variety of journals and newspapers. Aseem has several authorships to his credit, including the much praised book released in September 2021 on Indian contemporary tax landscape titled, “Finding a Straight Line Between Twists and Turns”. He has contributed to numerous academic & professional journals and conferences, including CCH Wolters Kluwer’s Publication on “A Compendium of Advance Rulings on Income Tax” and has also contributed towards ICAI’s publication on “A Study on Drafting & Conveyance”. He is a contributory author of “Taxation of Crypto Assets” a recent publication by Kluwer Law International His views are often sought on contemporary tax and policy matters by the Print and Electronic media. Aseem has consistently been adjudged, over the years, as one of the leading tax experts in the Asia Pacific Region by Legal 500, Chambers and Partners Asia Pacific, Expert Guides, Who’s Who Legal, Asialaw Leading Lawyers, etc.
