Doil Son

Biography

Doil Son is a partner at Yulchon practicing primarily in the areas of Mergers & Acquisitions, Technology, Media & Telecommunications (TMT), Data Privacy and Cyber Security including Trade Secret Protection as well as crisis management. Before entering private practice, Mr. Son served as a district court judge for two years. He has advised a number of multinational/local e-commerce business and financial institutions with regard to a wide range of issues such as cross-border payment system, mobile payment system, data privacy and cyber security, one of the most notable examples of which may be his active role in the biggest data breach case in Korean history in 2014 (when the breached data belong to more than 100 million users). He has advised clients to bring its data management system into full compliance with ever-tightening data privacy regulations in Korea. He is successfully leading Yulchon’s Data Privacy team to have more extensive experience than any other top-tier law firms in Korea, particularly with regard to establishment of data privacy compliance system. He has also represented various clients in various trade secret violation cases and consulting projects for trade secret protection system. He has also advised domestic and international clients for mergers and acquisition transactions including eBay’s USD 1.2 billion acquisition of Gmarket (Korea’s leading e-commerce company) and Dongwon’s acquisition of Starkist at USD 300 million as well as various cross-border M&As. He recently advised Doosan Infracore Bobcat Holdings for its sale of French subsidiary (Montabert) to Joy Global (U.S. listed company) at approximately 110 million euros. He advised Kuraray for its acquisition of Glass Laminating Solutions from Dupont in USD 540 Million in relation to the business and factory in Korea as well. He has especially advised on various transactions (investment/acquisition/licensing/joint venture) relating to technology companies and media industry. Mr. Son has a B.A. in political science from the Seoul National University and an L.L.M. from UCLA School of Law (2002). He joined Yulchon as a partner in 2012, after serving as a judge at Kwangju District Court for two years since 1996 and working at Shin & Kim, Arter & Hadden, and Hwang Mok Park P.C. Mr. Son has established his international network by serving as the Vice President for International Relations of the Korean Bar Association and Advisor to Ministry of Justice for International Law until February 2013, and currently serving as the Publication Officer of Technology Law Committee of the International Bar Association and Vice Chair of TMT Committee of the Inter-Pacific Bar Association. Mr. Son’s 2011 book Sovereign Wealth War illustrates the dynamics of various sovereign wealth funds which are now the key sources of global funding.
