Asma Muttawa

Biography

Asma is a Counsel at White & Case LLP in the Energy, Infrastructure and Project Finance Group. Asma has 20+ years of professional experience delivering legal expertise on global issues related to the energy and oil & gas sectors. She is also an Honorary Lecturer at the Centre for Energy, Petroleum and Mineral Law and Policy (CEPMLP) at the University of Dundee. Recently, Asma served as a General Legal Counsel at the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), coordinating all aspects of the Organization’s legal advice on both international and internal dimensions. After which she was retained as Special Advisor by the OPEC Ministerial Conference on the OPEC+ Cooperation between OPEC and non-OPEC Oil Producing Countries which began with the Declaration of Cooperation, concluded during her tenure as General Legal Counsel in 2016, and culminated with the Alliance of Cooperation in June 2019. Before joining OPEC, Asma worked as an in-house Legal Counsel for Schlumberger in Libya and at its Paris Headquarters, covering Europe, CEU and Africa on topics of legal operations, and compliance as well as implementing specific projects on themes such as local content, HAZMATs etc.. Before that, Asma worked for various United Nations organizations leading programmes on various legal and governance issues. Asma speaks English and Arabic fluently as well as German at a basic level. She has an LLB (Hons) in Law and an LLM in International Business and Comparative Law focusing on International Arbitration and Banking Law as well as being a Member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitration with extensive experience in Mediation and Negotiation.
