Gautam Bhattacharyya

Biography

Gautam specialises in international commercial arbitration and litigation, especially in the fields of energy, projects, and infrastructure, banking and financial services, and corporate and commercial law disputes in a wide variety of industry sectors. He qualified as a solicitor in 1993 and has been a partner in the firm since 2000. As well as being a London partner, Gautam was the founding Managing Partner of Reed Smith’s Singapore office from October 2012 to the end of 2015. He also jointly heads the firm's cross-departmental India Group and the firm’s International Arbitration Team. Gautam is also a member of Reed Smith’s Executive Committee – the firm’s global board. Gautam has extensive experience of acting in international arbitrations under the rules of the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), UNCITRAL, the London Court of International Arbitration (LCIA), the Singapore International Arbitration Centre (SIAC), the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID), the Arbitration Institute of the Stockholm Chamber of Commerce (SCC), the Swiss Chambers of Commerce, other arbitration bodies, and in ad hoc arbitrations. He has also conducted litigations before the English courts, as well as cases involving the courts of many other jurisdictions. He has, year after year, been named as a highly recommended and leading litigation and arbitration practitioner in the independent legal directories Legal 500, Chambers & Partners, Chambers Global, Chambers Asia, Legal Experts, Euromoney’s Guide to the World’s Leading Experts in Commercial Arbitration, Super Lawyers, and Asia-Pacific Legal 500. He was previously a visiting law lecturer at the University of Westminster. In the 2018 Chambers & Partners Global Rankings, published in February 2018, Gautam was again ranked as an individual in Band 1, the very highest band, for foreign based lawyers advising Indian clients on international arbitration and litigation matters. Gautam has contributed to various articles in The Company Lawyer, Butterworths Journal of International Banking and Financial Law, Legal Business, Journal of International Banking Law, International Corporate Law, In Brief, Tolley’s Insolvency, Commercial Law Practitioner, The Litigator, Platt’s Energy Economist, The Lawyer, PwC’s Securities Litigation Study and the firm’s external legal publications on various legal issues.
