Angeles Murgier

Biography

Angeles Murgier is Conference Quality Officer of the Environment, Health and Safety Committee of the Section on Energy, Environment, Natural Resources and Infrastructure Law International Bar Association (IBA). Angeles is a senior associate of Beccar Varela. She focuses her practice on general environmental counseling including regulatory, permitting and compliance issues. She also works on the environmental law aspects of corporate transactions, performs environmental due diligence, compliance audits and participates in environmental litigation. She also has wide experience in Corporate Law. Before joining Beccar Varela Angeles worked for 16 years at another full service firm based in Buenos Aires. Her practice there was focused on both Environmental and Corporate Law. Before that she worked for four years in a small boutique law firm devoted to Environmental Law. Angeles graduated from the Argentine Catholic University in March 2000. During 2001 she attended the International Career Associates Program at the Graduate School of International Relations and Pacific Studies of the University of California in San Diego with coursework on Trade and the Environment in Latin America and Policy Issues in Sustainable Development. In May 2005, she attended the International Environmental Law Course of the American Law Institute and the American Bar Association Committee on Continuing Professional Education (Washington, D.C.). In June 2008, she attended the Summer Session of Environmental Law at the American University Washington College of Law (Washington, D.C.) with coursework on Climate Change and Emissions Trading, International Business and Environment, and International Institutions and Environmental Protection. In 2015 she completed the Executive Training Program on Corporate Social Responsibility and Sustainable Business, organized by the Social Innovation Center and the Business Education Center of Universidad de San Andres, with the support of the American Chamber of Commerce in Argentina (AmCham). She also attended the Posgraduate Seminar on Politics and Climate Change in Comparative Perspective (Development, Innovation and Community Program), Facultad Lationamericana de Ciencias Sociales (FLACSO), Argentine Chapter. Angeles is a member of the ABA Section on Environment, Energy and Natural Resources (SEER) (she was appointed as the first International Liaison Vice Chair for 2008-2011 in the International Environmental and Resources Law Committee), Environmental Law Institute (Washington D.C., USA), Environmental Committee of the AmCham and the Bar Association of the Buenos Aires City. In March 2017 Angeles co-chaired the First Environmental Summit of the Americas, a joint initiative of the ABA SEER and the IBA’s Section of Energy, Environment, Natural Resources and Infrastructure Law (SEERIL). Angeles will co-chair the Biennial Conference of the IBA SEERIL in Lisbon in April 2018. The 2010 to 2017 editions of The International Who’s Who of Environment Lawyers (The Official Research Partner of the IBA and Strategic Research Partner of the ABA Section of International Law) include Angeles among the five leading Environment lawyers in Argentina. Chambers Latin America includes her as an “Associate to Watch” and “Up-and-coming” individual in Environmental Law in Argentina. Angeles co-contributed the Argentina chapter for the ABA Book “International Environmental Law: The Practitioner's Guide to the Laws of the Planet”. She was assistant editor of The Journal of Environment and Development, a Review of International Policy (published by Sage Publications). She co-edited the 2007 edition of the Environmental Legislation Handbook of the American Chamber of Commerce in Argentina and contributed chapters for the 2011 and 2017 edition. Locally, she published various articles in La Ley (a legal publication of The Thompson Corporation in Argentina). Since February 2015, Angeles is a member of the Board of Advisors of The Ocean Foundation (Washington DC, USA). She judged memorials in the 2007-2009 and 2011 and 2012 International Environmental Moot Court competitions organized by the Stetson University College of Law (Florida, USA) (co-sponsored by the International Environmental Law Committee of the ABA SEER). She speaks Spanish and English.
