Ian Gershengorn

Biography

Ian is chair of Jenner & Block’s Appellate and Supreme Court Practice. From 2013-17, Ian was in the Office of the Solicitor General at the US Department of Justice, first as Principal Deputy Solicitor General and then as Acting Solicitor General. While there, Ian argued 13 cases at the US Supreme Court. From 2009-13, Ian oversaw the DOJ’s Federal Programs Branch, supervising the defense of federal agencies, the President, and other government officials in challenges to regulatory and policy initiatives. From 1997-2009, Ian was a partner at Jenner & Block, focusing on appellate litigation. Ian graduated from Harvard College and Harvard Law School. He clerked for Judge Amalya Kearse and for Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens.
