Latin American Regional Forum – From the Editors – October 2026

Monday 5 October 2026

Dear Forum members,

A conference report is, by definition, an imperfect exercise. It tries to capture conversations that were alive, spontaneous and sometimes contradictory, and turn them into something that can still be useful after everyone has left the room.

That is what we have tried to do here.

Reading these reports together, rather than session by session, reveals something more interesting than a collection of individual panels. A picture begins to emerge of Latin America at an important moment of transition. Geopolitics is increasingly shaping investment decisions while regulation is becoming more sophisticated and more consequential. Technology is changing both the businesses we advise and the way lawyers themselves work. Capital is coming from new places, looking at different assets and asking different questions. And across sectors, the region appears simultaneously more attractive and more complex.

There was another theme, perhaps less obvious but just as important. Again and again, speakers returned to the human side of our profession: judgement, trust, relationships, curiosity and the ability to understand what a client is actually trying to accomplish. One of the simplest observations made during the conference may also have been one of the most important: legal advice can be perfectly correct and still not be useful.

That idea also captures the purpose of what the Young Council of the IBA Latin American Regional Forum did with this compilation. The objective is not merely to record what was said. It is to listen carefully, identify what matters and translate a rich conversation into something useful for people who were not in the room. The reports that follow were prepared by young lawyers from across the region who took that responsibility seriously and brought their own judgement and perspective to the exercise.

My hope is that this compilation does more than preserve what happened in Punta del Este. Ideally, it allows some of those conversations to travel further and perhaps provoke a few new ones along the way.

Best wishes,

Mariano Batalla
