Running a bar post-Covid-19 – old challenges and new

Covid-19 focused the attention of many bars on the need to update their technological capability to accommodate more virtual and remote programming, meetings and conferences, among other things. While some had made strides towards that, others were faced with the need to adapt immediately. With the general end of the pandemic and lockdowns, it became apparent that various aspects of the new accommodations should not be abandoned, and a return to “business as usual” was not optimum. This interactive program addresses how bars are adapting post-Covid to retain certain structures that proved advantageous, and what lessons have been learned.

Artificial intelligence and professional ethics: old wine in new bottles?

As part of the IBA presidential task force on artificial intelligence, the Bar Issues Commission is tasked with reviewing the impact on regulatory and ethical rules regarding lawyers. Several jurisdictions have already issued guidelines and best practice commentaries relating to the professional conduct of lawyers. The panel will provide a cross section of comparative responses by bars and regulatory authorities to artificial intelligence, and feature speakers from across the spectrum of IBA entities involved with the task force. The session will be interactive so that attendees may also provide input on their bar activities.

The revised 2024 IBA guidelines on conflicts of interest in international arbitration: new wine in an old bottle?

The IBA Guidelines on conflicts of interest in international arbitration have been a great success since their inception in 2004. In line with the tradition to revise the Guidelines every 10 years, an updated version has been published in 2024. The overall structure of the Guidelines has not changed, including the well-known traffic-light system of red, orange and green lists, which has become a worldwide norm. Nonetheless, the 2024 guidelines innovate in many respects. A group of experts will discuss the revision process, the changes made – as well as those discussed but eventually not retained. The panel will reflect on the continued usefulness of the Guidelines for international arbitrations around the globe.

What does the metaverse mean for e-commerce: the use of blockchain for general contracts and dispute resolution

Metaverse is growing exponentially with increasing support from investors and business entities. It provides real-life experiences in a simulated environment with unmatched potential for entertainment and earnings, which can be divided into two sorts of platforms in general. The first involves leveraging nonfungible tokens (NFTs) and cryptocurrencies to create blockchain-based metaverse startups. People can buy virtual products and create their own settings on web platforms. The second group uses the metaverse to describe virtual worlds in general, where people might meet for business or enjoyment. In addition, an array of technology solutions for closing contracts and solving disputes is available with the blockchain technology.
