26th International Private Client Virtual Conference: Advising real clients in a virtual world

A virtual conference presented by the IBA Private Client Tax Committee and supported by the IBA Family Law Committee

1–3 March 2021

For more than two decades, the International Private Client Conference has taken place in the heart of London on the first Monday and Tuesday of March. This Conference and its setting are an unmissable rendezvous for the wealth advisors’ community.

Despite the ongoing pandemic, it would be unthinkable for the conference not to proceed in some form and, because it cannot be held in London, the Officers of the IBA’s Private Client Tax Committee have decided to hold a virtual event on the usual days. The virtual Conference will take the form of three roundtables, followed by two networking sessions; with our usual open business meeting, during which we will discuss plans for the 2022 conference that will hopefully see us back in London, being held on day three.

Roundtable one: Keeping it current – key developments in your jurisdiction

Let us learn as to what is happening in your part of the world that could be of interest to a private client advisor. Whether it's the Biden administration's estate tax plans and new corporate transparency rules in the United States, the start of DAC6 reporting in most European countries and the United Kingdom's almost wholesale repeal of DAC6, new rules for UK high-net-worth individuals residing in various European Union countries post-Brexit, changes to the citizenship and residency programs in Malta, Cyprus or Portugal, the EU's proposed extension of Common Reporting Standard to crypto assets, unexplained wealth orders and other anti-money laundering niceties, or some brand-new wealth, estate, inheritance, gift or capital gains tax in your country – please chip in. Everything is on the table and may be discussed. However, mentioning Covid-19, pandemics or vaccines is strictly taboo!

Roundtable two: Law at a distance: living in a Covid-19 world

Covid-19 has changed our daily life and the legal landscape. In many jurisdictions, you can now complete your estate planning from the comfort of your sofa. Roundtable participants will discuss positive developments, such as signing a real estate acquisition on the other side of the planet in a few clicks, the negative aspects, such as security and confidentiality challenges, and the social impacts of the pandemic.

Roundtable three: Advising the ever-changing client

Our clients are changing citizenship, residency, life partners and/or assets at an ever-increasing rate. How do we plan for them if they keep changing their situation before, or soon after, implementing our strategic planning? How do we deal with the changing attitudes to wealth between generations? Are our clients’ children making an ethical, sustainable path their focus rather than wealth accumulation?
