Artificial intelligence (AI) is visibly transforming the legal profession at an unprecedented speed. Its sphere of impact readily covers a gamut of issues that can, on the one hand, be addressed (albeit in a limited scope) by regulatory frameworks and bar associations, but can also, on the other hand, include legal lacunae that is hard to fill given the impact ’s speedily disruptive force. The IBA Section on Public and Professional Interest (SPPI) has been spearheading the 'AI Working Group Project' (Project) since mid-2023, comprised of various phases, in order to collect data on, evaluate and determine AI’s impact on the legal profession as a whole. The current report provides the results obtained from the first prong (or phase) of the Project: namely, AI’s impact on law firms.
