Opening Ceremony
At the Opening Ceremony on Sunday 2 November 2025, Host Steering Committee Co-Chairs Shane Freitag and Karen Sargeant compered the evening, beginning by introducing Chief Perry Bellegarde, former National Chief of the Assembly of First Nations, to give the official country welcome on behalf of Canada’s indigenous peoples. A group drum performance with Elder Kevin Myran followed.
IBA President Jaime Carey’s opening address focused on advancing the rule of law; AI; diversity and inclusion; pro bono work; the IBA-founded eyeWitness to atrocities app; and taking the IBA closer to the continents of Africa and Asia.
Keynote address
The keynote address was delivered by Justice Rosalie Silberman Abella, an international expert on human rights law who, in 2004, became the first Jewish woman appointed to the Supreme Court of Canada. Her address was interrupted several times with applause, and she received a standing ovation.
In recognition of her dedication to upholding the rule of law throughout her career, which spanned five decades, Justice Abella was presented with the IBA Benjamin Berell Ferencz Rule of Law Lifetime Achievement Award (sponsored by LexisNexis). Watch the award presentation here.
