Sanctions – Between words and war

Friday 18 November 2022

The war in Ukraine has compelled countries to impose increasingly stringent sanctions on Russia. However, the effectiveness of sanctions, and their implications for human rights, are coming under growing scrutiny. This Global Insight podcast examines the intended – and unintended – consequences of this foreign policy and security tool.

Speaking:

  • Thomas Biersteker, Professor of International Security at the Geneva Graduate Institute, discusses how sanctions can be both effective and circumvented.
  • Sergei Guriev, former chief economist at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and current Provost at Sciences Po in Paris, says the strongest sanctions against Russia are still to come.
  • Alena Douhan, UN Special Rapporteur on the negative impact of unilateral coercive measures on the enjoyment of human rights, has been monitoring closely the adverse impact of sanction regimes on civilian populations.
