IBAHRI statement on death penalty to the 34th Session of the Human Rights Council

Thursday 7 September 2023

On 01 March 2017, the International Bar Association’s Human Rights Institute (IBAHRI) delivered a statement on the death penalty to the 34th Session of the United Nations Human Rights Council as part of a high-level panel on the death penalty.

Delivered by IBAHRI Director Dr Phillip Tahmindjis, the statement outlined the IBAHRI’s total opposition to the use of the death penalty in all circumstances, arguing that its imposition contravenes international law.

The IBAHRI’s statement emphasised in particular the threat to international fair trial standards posed by jurisdictions which provide for a mandatory death penalty for certain crimes.
