A webinar presented by the IBA Private Client Tax Committee and the IBA Taxes Committee

Latin America is home to some of the world’s most dynamic family-owned businesses, yet their path to international growth is rarely simple. As these enterprises expand beyond their home markets, they encounter a complex intersection of structural, legal and tax challenges that vary significantly across jurisdictions.

This panel will bring together practitioners from across the region to examine the critical decisions family businesses face as they scale globally: how to structure for international expansion, how to preserve ownership and control across generations and how to navigate cross-border tax exposure from a Latin American perspective. From holding structures in Panama and Uruguay to the Cayman Islands, to succession planning and governance transitions, this webinar will offer practical insights for advisers working with LatAm family enterprises at every stage of growth.

The panel will comment on the following subjects:

  • holding structures favoured by LatAm family businesses and why;
  • succession and estate planning as a business crosses borders;
  • cross-border tax considerations, including treaty access, controlled foreign company rules and US reporting obligations for LatAm families with US exposure;
  • governance structures: from founder-led to institutionally managed; and
  • regulatory and compliance trends affecting LatAm family enterprises globally.
