Alan Wong

Biography

Alan Wong is an established HR Executive and Managing Director & Head of the Human Resources Department at the Bank of China, U.S. Branches. Mr. Wong oversees the design and implementation of HR strategy and programming at the Bank which currently employs around 800 individuals across four U.S. branches in New York City, Chicago, and Los Angeles. With over 30 years of professional experience, Mr. Wong has had a prolific career in the industry. As a trusted strategic partner to the Bank’s Executive Management team, he has been responsible for building and overseeing the different pillars within Human Resources and ensuring strategic alignment with the Bank’s overall business objectives. This includes all aspects of the employee life cycle: talent acquisition, onboarding, benefits, total rewards, learning and development and employee relations. Furthermore, especially pertinent to a foreign institution, he also oversees expatriate management and immigration. Due to the intense regulatory landscape of the banking industry Mr. Wong also leads HR initiatives to ensure and support compliance with regulatory programs and requirements. He recognizes the criticality of strategic staffing alignment with regulatory compliance and regularly interacts with the bank’s supervisory agencies, including the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC), and assists the bank with implementing regulatory driven initiatives from an HR perspective. These include programs related to enhanced talent management and staffing augmentation, anti-discrimination, anti-harassment, and whistleblower rights. In addition to ensuring industry best practices, Mr. Wong keeps a finger on the pulse of new developments and ideas. For example, as Diversity, Equity and Inclusion has begun to dominate the discourse within the HR industry and in society at large, Mr. Wong has led his team and leadership to shift priorities and develop key goals around these efforts in the coming years. Mr. Wong is an active member of a variety of professional organizations and a frequent public speaker. He is a respected and well-known authority on the application of U.S. employment and human resources law and practice to Asian businesses. He has spearheaded the development of the Foundation of the Asian Human Resources Forum, providing advice and guidance on HR related issues to numerous Asian companies in the US, both in and outside of financial services. He has been a Co-Chair of the Foreign Bank Human Resources Forum and a member of the New Jersey China Chamber of Commerce. He holds a B.A. in Business Administration and Economics from the State University of New York at Albany.
