Biography

Michael specialises in tax litigation and tax advisory work in Malaysia. He has experience representing clients in a broad range of direct and indirect tax disputes before the Malaysian courts and tax tribunals. Throughout his four years at Raja, Darryl & Loh, Michael achieved favourable court decisions or settlements with the tax authority in every court work he handled from the outset of the engagement, including disputes involving Toyota, Heineken, and Halliburton. He also successfully petitioned the Ministry of Finance on behalf of his clients, securing amendments to tax legislation and a tax exemption. Before joining RDL, Michael was a senior tax consultant at EY Kuala Lumpur, where he advised multinational and Fortune 500 companies, including on the Malaysian tax aspects of a global restructuring undertaken by one of the world’s largest pharmaceutical companies. Michael has spoken on Malaysian tax law at international conferences in Toronto and Mexico City. He has also published tax writings with leading international institutions, including the International Bureau of Fiscal Documentation. In 2024, Michael received international recognition when the International Bar Association’s Taxes Committee selected his tax writing as the best among submissions received worldwide from legal practitioners aged 35 and under.
