Hamza Al-Kateab
Biography
Dr Zahed Katurji “Hamza AlKateab” is a Syrian doctor, human rights advocate, and Co-Founder and CEO of Action For Sama. From 2012 to December 2016, Hamza provided frontline medical care to thousands of civilians during the siege of eastern Aleppo, where he served as an emergency doctor and manager of Al-Quds Hospital, one of the last remaining hospitals in the city. During this period, he also helped coordinate medical evacuations and international advocacy efforts in response to attacks on healthcare facilities. Since relocating to the UK, Hamza has continued his advocacy work focused on the protection of healthcare in conflict, accountability for attacks on civilians and medical facilities, and amplifying Syrian voices through public engagement, policy discussions, and media. He is currently undertaking a PhD at King’s College London, researching medical evacuations for civilians under siege with the aim of identifying lessons and best practices to inform future humanitarian and policy responses.
