Chris Hunter

Biography

Chris Hunter is a partner in Torys’ litigation department, recognized for his work in commercial disputes and international arbitration. He has extensive trial experience and has appeared as counsel before all levels of court in Ontario, Alberta, British Columbia, and the Supreme Court of Canada, as well as numerous arbitral and regulatory tribunals. The core of Chris’s practice focuses on complex business disputes, typically involving contractual claims, corporate rights and obligations, and economic torts, often with cross-border elements. Chris carries on an extensive international and domestic arbitration practice, having arbitrated claims under multiple treaties and procedural rules including ICSID, UNCITRAL, ICC, AAA and ADRIC, among others. He also has considerable experience litigating recognition and enforcement proceedings domestically on behalf of award creditors and debtors, and representing international organizations before Canadian courts, including in the leading decision on international organization immunity before the Supreme Court of Canada. Chris also defends and advises many of Canada’s leading businesses in competition related class actions and tribunal proceedings involving allegations under the Competition Act, Investment Canada Act, and consumer protection legislation.
