Eiji Chatani
Biography
Eiji CHATANI is Chair of Japan Fair Trade Commission. After graduating from the Faculty of Law at the University of Tokyo, Chatani joined the Ministry of Finance (“MOF”) in 1986. He had served in various important positions in the MOF and accumulated distinct experiences, including Director for Fiscal Affairs and Director for Budget in the Budget Bureau, as well as Director of the Secretarial Division. He also served as Director-General of the Minister’s Secretariat, and in 2021, was appointed as Director-General of the Budget Bureau. In 2022, Chatani was appointed as Vice-Minister of Finance, a position he held until 2024. In the private and legal sectors, Chatani serves as Chairman of Mizuho Research & Technologies, Inc. He also passed the Japanese bar exam while enrolled at the University of Tokyo. He was registered as an attorney in 2025 and in the same year, Of Counsel at law firm Nishimura & Asahi (Gaikokuho Kyodo Jigyo). He assumed the position of Chair of the Japan Fair Trade Commission in May 2025.
