Biography

José Ugaz is a Partner in the Criminal Law practice at Benites, Vargas & Ugaz in Lima, Peru. A world-renowned lawyer, he served as ad-hoc state attorney for Peru in one of the biggest corruption cases in Latin American history against the criminal network of former Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori. He is a member of the boards of TI Brazil and TI Ukraine and chair of Proetica, the Peruvian chapter of Transparency International. Mr. Ugaz was most recently the Chair of Transparency International from 2014 – 2017. He has also served as an official at the World Bank’s anti-corruption unit from 2004 – 2006. He teaches criminal law at the Law School of Pontifical Catholic University of Peru since 1987. Mr. Ugaz studied Law at the Law School
