Jairus Nyaoga

Biography

Mohammed Nyaoga is an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya and Senior Partner at Mohammed Muigai LLP. He holds LLB and LLM degrees from the University of Nairobi, a Postgraduate Diploma from the Kenya School of Law, and is a Certified Public Secretary (CPS). With over 40 years post admission experience, Mr. Nyaoga is recognized for his specialization in Corporate Finance, Civil, Commercial Litigation, and Corporate Governance. He is the former Chairman of the Central Bank of Kenya Board of Directors and former Chairman to the International Monetary Fund (Washington) External Experts Panel. He is currently a governance expert for the IMF in Central Banks Governance for Central Banks (Capacity Building Regional Forums). He holds certificates in Corporate Governance from Commonwealth Association of Corporate Governance, Certificate from American Securities and Exchange Commission and a Certificate in Bank Governance from Saïd Business School, University of Oxford. He is a Certified Company Director and a Member of the London Institute of Directors and of the Institute of Directors of Kenya. He has been Vice-Chairman of the Law Reform Commission, Chairman of its Business Laws Committee and Chairman of the Mining Licenses Task Force. He has also been a Director of Capital Markets Authority, Chairman of International Commission of Jurists, Council Member of Law Society of Kenya, Special Board Corporate Governance Advisor and Chairman of EcoBank Kenya. He has also been Chairman at the Commission of Inquiry into the suspension of the County Government of Makueni. He is currently the Chairperson of the African Development Bank Group’s Disclosure and Access to Information (DAI) Appeals Panel and the Chairman of the Board of Directors of Absa Bank Kenya PLC. In addition, he is a certified training consultant in corporate governance with the Commonwealth Centre for Corporate Governance for over 22 years where he has trained several Boards in Kenya and globally. He has also been a Consultant and Trainer for State University of New York on procurement (SUNNY Kenya) and a Lecturer (LLM Programme) University of Nairobi, School of Law (Business Law Department) on Public Procurement and Accounting Law. He has been a regular Trainer/ Speaker at Central Banking Publications (UK) Governance Training Series at Windsor, Cambridge and Oxford and also one of authors and editors of Central Banking Publications. Mr. Nyaoga's legal and academic contributions have earned him recognition as Senior Counsel and the prestigious Presidential Award of the Elder of the Order of the Burning Spear (EBS) for his distinguished service to the country.
