Biography

Michael Coates is General Counsel Corporate of Shell. In this role, Michael leads a global team of lawyers and other professionals supporting Shell’s enterprise-level activities. He joined Shell in 2004 from the London office of Slaughter and May, where he worked as a mergers & acquisitions and corporate finance lawyer. During his career at Shell, Michael has served as UK Head of Legal, Associate General Counsel of the Downstream and Upstream businesses, Group Chief Ethics & Compliance Officer, Executive Committee Secretary and Private Secretary to the Chief Executive Officer. Michael is a Fellow of the UK Institute of Directors, a member of the LPD Council of the International Bar Association and a member of the Development Board of the Bingham Centre for the Rule of Law. He also serves as Non-Executive Chairman of Sizewell C Funded Decommissioning Company in the UK.
