Biography

Jan is Head of Financial Regulation Group at Slaughter and May. Jan's practice focuses on matters of strategic importance to financial institutions, with particular emphasis on regulatory advice and multi-jurisdictional corporate and commercial transactions. He acts for a broad range of such institutions, including banks, investment banks, brokers, insurance and reinsurance groups, market infrastructure operators and asset managers. Jan's work includes extensive advice on structural reform, resolution planning, regulatory capital and other prudential matters. He is consequently heavily involved in advising on the implications of Brexit for UK banks and investment firms. He has up to date insights into the UK financial regulators' developing policies and EU developments on matters of critical importance to banks and other financial services businesses. Much of his focus is on presenting the complex issues involved in a fundamentally straightforward way, facilitating the understanding of clients and regulators of legal challenges, transactions, business models and structures. In addition to non-contentious regulatory advice, Jan has also advised on internal and regulatory investigations in the banking and insurance sectors. Jan has led Slaughter and May teams on a number of major M&A and other strategic projects in the banking, insurance and asset management sectors in recent years. He has also led Slaughter and May’s financial regulatory work on recent major transactions and other projects for Aviva, Barclays, Deutsche Bank, GE Capital, ING, JPMorgan, Legal & General, NN Group, Prudential, Standard Chartered Bank and several private equity sponsors. Jan is listed as a leading individual in the 'Financial Services: Non-contentious Regulatory' section of Chambers UK 2017. Jan is the contributing editor of The Banking Regulation Review (Law Business Research, since 2010). He has also contributed chapters to books on asset management and company law. He is a regular contributor to PLC Magazine and is a member of the Financial Markets Law Committee.
