Gabriele Apfelbacher
Biography
Gabriele Apfelbacher is a partner in the Frankfurt office of international law firm Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton LLP. She focuses on capital markets, corporate and financial sector regulatory matters. She represents clients in capital markets and public M&A transactions and advises on corporate governance and bank and financial regulatory matters. Gabriele is widely published on capital markets, M&A, corporate governance and financial sector regulatory matters. She is recommended in several capital markets, corporate/M&A and banking categories by various legal directories, such as JUVE, The Legal 500 Deutschland or Chambers. Lately, she has been named among Manager Magazin’s 2018 “Top 100 Most Influential Women in German Business.” Manager Magazin lauded Gabriele as one of the top female lawyers in the area of M&A advice and capital markets transactions. In the summer of 2011, she was appointed a member of the Business Law Committee (Handelsrechtsausschuss) of the German Bar Association (Deutscher Anwaltverein). Since then, she has been a co-reporter (Berichterstatterin) for comments on numerous draft legislation and other regulation, such as amendments to the German Corporate Governance Code, the Shareholder Rights Directive II, the German Stock Corporation Act, the BaFin Issuer Guide and the Revised Transparency Directive. Since May 2018, she represents Cleary Gottlieb on the Advisory Board of the European Banking Institute. Prior to joining Cleary Gottlieb, Gabriele was a staff member of the Frankfurt Stock Exchange. She received an LL.M. degree from Columbia University School of Law in 1994 and a Doctorate in Law, summa cum laude, from the University of Regensburg in 1992. She is a member of the Bars in Frankfurt am Main and New York. Gabriele studied law at the University of Regensburg and graduated in 1988 (Erstes Staatsexamen). During her mandatory practical training (Referendariat) she spent time at various courts and government agencies, as well as in private practice, in Germany and abroad. She passed the German bar exam (Zweites Staatsexamen) in 1991.
