Biography

Mathias Steinø Partner of Hafnia Law Firm, a Copenhagen based boutique firm specialized in shipping, oil trading and litigation/arbitration. Admitted to Danish Supreme Court in 2012. Has litigated a number of cases before the Supreme Court including within bunker trading and combustion related issues. Mathias has otherwise been involved in a very high number of bunker-related disputes in more than 60 jurisdictions including arrest of vessels, off spec disputes related to ISO specifications, quantity disputes and product liability flowing from fuel and engine disputes. Served as counsel in numerous Danish and English arbitrations under the rules of ICC, LMAA, Danish Institute of Arbitration (DIA) as well as ad hoc arbitrations under UNCITRAL rules and local legislation. Experience from JAMS mediation (US), UK ad hoc mediation and Danish institutional mediation. Experience as counsel in arbitrations under Danish Institute of Arbitration (DIA), ICC, LMAA, Danish and international ad hoc arbitrations under UNCITRAL rules and local legislation. Served as arbitrator in arbitrations under the rules of Danish Institute of Arbitration (DIA) and in international ad hoc arbitration. Graduate from Copenhagen University in 2003 and studies at New York University School of Law in 2002. Lecturer for 8 years at Copenhagen University in international commercial arbitration and the Willem C Vis commercial arbitration moot. Lecturer of the year at Copenhagen University Faculty of Law in 2009. Past lecturer in international trade and shipping at Copenhagen Business School. Listed tier one in shipping in Chambers and Legal 500.
