The IBA Constitution and Governance Committee invites all interested parties to attend the Constitutional Review and Strategic Direction session to discuss the work of the Constitution and Governance Committee on the following topics:

- the role of the Nominations Committee and process;
- who may speak for the IBA, for IBAHRI, and the role of the BIC Policy Committee; and
- voting strengths overall.

Background:

As a reminder, the CGC has been operational since early 2021, with a mandate to advise on the interpretation of, and amendments to, the IBA Constitution. In addition, as part of the 2020 IBA Strategic Plan, the CGC was tasked with assessing whether the Constitution of the International Bar Association meets the current needs of the Association and is fit for the future.

The CGC concluded its initial review in 2024 and submitted proposed amendments to the IBA Constitution, which were approved at the IBA Council Meeting held in May 2025 in Milan. Since the IBA Council Meeting in Milan, and consistent with statements made during the meeting, the IBA leadership has directed the CGC to continue addressing the issues raised during consultations that the CGC had identified as “special projects”. Broadly stated, the CGC was asked to consider the following issues: the role of the Nominations Committee and process; who may speak for the IBA, for IBAHRI, and the role of the BIC Policy Committee; and voting strengths overall.

The open meeting is an invitation to review the work of the CGC to date on these topics and to address any questions. The material has been sent by individual mail to all Council members.

Please review the reports from the IBA Constitution and Governance Committee Working Groups above, which will also be discussed at the IBA Council Meeting on 23 May 2026 in Prague.
