Consisting of four sessions over two days, these very dynamic and well-attended sessions enable you to select from a menu of hot topics in the IP, private M&A and technology sectors and participate in roundtable discussions.

 Topics of current interest are selected to stimulate a lively debate. Moderators on each table introduce the table topic and the participants do the rest. Background knowledge or experience within areas for discussion is not required. Our menu will include hot and 'late breaking' topics in the areas of intellectual property law, internet law and mobile technologies, privacy and data protection, technology and contracting.

 Discussion is usually around the interface of law, business, technology and culture, with a global focus. Many topics for discussion are often the subject of considerable public and media interest. In participating in the table topics, you will gain a deeper insight into these areas and be able to add your own comments.

 The format is interactive networking. The sessions will provide you with a great opportunity to meet many other lawyers and to discuss topics of mutual interest with them; don't forget your business cards, e-cards and contact details to share. We welcome new participants in these discussions.

Participants should select two round table topics per session with 25 minutes at each table.

Database infrastructure and data‑centre‑driven cloud services have become the backbone of the global economy, underpinning competitiveness in finance, AI, logistics, healthcare, and media. Digitalization and AI hyperscaling are driving steep increases in electricity demand and reshaping grid load profiles, accelerating long‑term power‑purchase agreements and capital flows into renewables and storage.

Policymakers and regulators are scrambling to catch up with this tectonic shift, confronting the climate, water, land‑use, labour, and digital‑rights implications of hyperscale build‑out and AI‑driven demand. In Europe, the EU Taxonomy, Energy Efficiency Directive, and CSRD are turning data centres into test beds for “green digital” policy, with binding efficiency thresholds, granular energy‑and‑water disclosures, and direct sustainable‑finance consequences. By contrast, the United States leans on a patchwork of state‑level energy, water, and data‑protection rules layered on grid‑interconnection constraints, producing a looser but increasingly contentious environment for siting, climate commitments, and community impacts.
For lawyers, this is no longer a niche specialty but a frontline ESG issue: guiding clients through sharply divergent transatlantic disclosure regimes while managing greenwashing risk, securities‑law exposure, and potential climate, resource, and human‑rights risks of the new data economy.
 

This session will consider whether lawyers and law firms should apply any ethical considerations in client selection.

• Should law firms represent oil and gas companies, tobacco business or clients from countries who have invaded other countries?

• Should law firms be screening potential new clients based on their environmental, social and governance (ESG) performance?

• How do decisions that law firms make around these types of questions ultimately impact their business?

• Are there other groups of clients that might be acceptable today, but with any future change in public opinion might raise reputational issues for the firm?

• How do law firms address the challenges of client selection?

• How do individual lawyers reconcile their own position with that of their firm?

Panel session covering topics including joint expert conferencing, joint expert reports and whether a consulting expert can be an independent expert.

This session explores what effective corporate governance looks like in 2025:

• Core principles and governance codes across Africa eg, King v in RSA as the benchmark of Corporate Governance practices in Africa?
• In-house counsel perspective on building governance frameworks
• Integration of AML, ABC and compliance with ESG goals
• Addressing emerging risks: cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, diversity and inclusion,  and data privacy

Startups are playing an increasingly important role in defence innovation, but two major challenges remain:
1. Classified vs unclassified collaboration – the defence sector operates within strict classified environments, while startups typically work in unclassified settings. How can startups still contribute to national security innovation?

2. Access to investment and procurement – the European Investment Bank (EIB) and venture capital firms are allocating capital to defence tech, but deals are not materialising at the expected scale. Which barriers are preventing funding from flowing into startups, and how can they navigate procurement?

This panel will explore practical strategies for defence startups to bridge these gaps and scale successfully.
 

Overview of the global landscape of insurance claims, offering analysis on emerging patterns, challenges and best practices in effective claims management across the globe.

In addition to effects on manufacturing processes and distribution along the supply chain, nearshoring involves the need for financing and planning for commercial/tax structures to operate in the nearshore jurisdiction as cost centres. This implicates issues that involve guarantees, project bankability, environmental, social and governance (ESG), tax and import/export.

The panel will explore guidelines for a financial institution’s proper due diligence on potential borrowers and the appropriate contractual protections in finance documents, in addition to the main opportunities for landing operations in Mexico and other popular nearshore jurisdictions.
 

In this session we will discuss the areas where smaller law firms have potential strength and can concentrate their efforts in succeeding and competing against much larger and international competitors: 
 
1. Collaboration (Do fee sharing and multidisciplinary models allow strength and depth to be brought to smaller firm clients? Can we be more competitive and profitable with collaboration and what forms?)

3. Culture (How can a positive and dynamic culture make the smaller firm an attractive destination for junior lawyers? How we boost diversity? How we treat generational exchange issues? How do we manage growth?)
