While the gender gap in data is not always life threatening, the design and use of artificial intelligence models in different industries can significantly disadvantage women’s lives. And while there is agreement that lots of good data can indeed help close gender gaps, there remain concerns that if the “right” questions are not being asked in the data collection process (including by women), gender gaps can actually widen when algorithms are misinformed.

Join a panel of thought leaders in exploring current and future implications of artificial intelligence (AI), with discussion ranging from the regulation of AI to how AI can be used as a force for good.

This session provides a once in a lifetime opportunity to ask one of last living witnesses of that crucial time in history his views about the implications of the current moment for the international legal order, and where we should go from here.

Over the last decade, the curtailment of funding for justice systems around the world has had serious consequences for the administration of justice. Many jurisdictions have witnessed a degrading in the courts estate; administrative systems have struggled to cope with demand; recruitment and retention within many areas of the justice system is adversely affected due to funding concerns; and publicly funded legal systems have been subject to repercussive cuts. 

These effects compromise access to justice and diminish respect for the justice system as a whole. Rather than justice being seen as a valuable commodity worthy of investment, it is too often seen as an unwelcome cost which should be subject to imposed decline. This has concerning repercussions for both the state and its citizens, creating real impediments to the rule of law and meaningful access to justice. 

The scope of legal aid systems across the world varies. As legal aid is a crucial vehicle by which the fundamental protection of human rights may be guaranteed, and the availability of legal aid is inextricably linked to access to justice, it is the responsibility of governments to guarantee that legal aid systems ensure that this protection is practical and effective, including the provision of adequate funding. This session will explore, through a number of case studies, the consequences of failing to invest in a country’s justice system and the response of the legal profession in safeguarding access to justice and the rule of law.
 

SustainabilityFocusRuleOfLawAt the 2021 IBA Global Showcase, Sanda Ojiambo, the CEO and Executive Director of the UN Global Compact sent a clear message to the international legal community: “We cannot deliver on the UN Sustainable Development Goals without peace, justice and strong institutions”. Although the legal profession has a role to play in the effective implementation of most, if not all, of the 17 UN SDGs, and their translation into ESG activity, UN SDG 16 covering "Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions” lies at the heart of the IBA’s mission. The business of law is not possible without the Rule of Law, which in its turn requires peace, justice and strong institutions.

This showcase session, presented by the IBA Section on Public and Professional Interest, will focus on how UN SDG #16 provides a golden thread that runs through much of the IBA’s activity. The session will be interactive and innovative, aiming to:

• pool the ideas relating to SDGs and ESGs discussed at other conference sessions held earlier in the week, and connect them to “Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions”; and 
• crowdsource the core content to ensure the IBA is actively collating key work on SDGs and ESG and sharing knowledge with members and others.

By drawing directly and immediately on the activities of IBA committees, sections and regional fora, we will build up a portrait of how the legal profession is contributing to UN SDG 16.
