Description

The wildlife and biodiversity found throughout Africa are unparalleled in the world. Yet rapid population growth, urbanisation and climate change, in addition to the increased commercialisation of wild animals, have drastically increased threats to not only certain species, but also to wildlife habitats and open space. This panel will address the current status of wildlife conservation in Africa, discussing the challenges related to extinction and biodiversity protection as well as the welfare of wild animals. The speakers will summarise the legal frameworks, including the permit systems, that govern wildlife conservation and animal welfare and the effectiveness of such laws and practices. The devastating impacts of wildlife trafficking will also be discussed. Potential solutions will be examined that consider environmental protections in concert with necessary economic growth.
