Maritime and Transport Law Conference: Opportunities and Risks in Shipping in 2019

20 May - 22 May 2019

Session information

Vessel scrapping – may she rest in peace (or pieces)

Committee(s)

Maritime and Transport Law Committee (Lead)
Maritime and Aviation Law Section

Description

Like everything, a ship’s life eventually ends and with it comes the inevitable efforts to extract her remaining value. The spectre still looms of the master driving the vessel at high tide up onto the beach at Chittagong and abandoning her there for scrappers forced to work in dangerous and environmentally unsafe conditions, and without regard to environmental safeguards. This panel will discuss the alternatives, including the status of The Hong Kong International Convention for the Safe and Environmentally Sound Recycling of Ships 2009 and the laws of various jurisdictions relating to the scrapping of vessels.
