Session information

Breakout session 6: What is moonlighting and why has it been gaining momentum?

Committee(s)

Diversity and Equality Law Committee (Lead)
Employment and Industrial Relations Law Committee (Lead)

Description

In this session, we will examine the moonlighting phenomenon, the practice of working a second job within or outside normal business hours, typically without the knowledge of the primary employer. We will delve into the potential legal and business risks associated with moonlighting, including conflicts of interest, decreased productivity, health and safety issues, intellectual property concerns, and potential data security breaches. We will also discuss with experts and leaders in the legal community how employers should address the issue. Are workplace policies enough to tackle the issue and can moonlighting policies be used by employers to attract or retain talent? We will also discuss if there are any points of intersection and interplay between moonlighting and the gig economy. In this session, we will examine the moonlighting phenomenon, the practice of working a second job within or outside normal business hours, typically without the knowledge of the primary employer.
