IBA Annual Award winners announced at the 2023 Annual Conference in Paris

The International Bar Association presents annual awards to legal practitioners who have demonstrated an outstanding commitment to human rights and pro bono work, as well as to a young lawyer who has shown excellence in their career to date, commitment to professional and ethical standards and dedication to the community at large. The 2023 IBA awardees were announced on Thursday 2 November during the Section on Public and Professional Interest (SPPI) breakfast at the IBA Annual Conference 2023 in Paris, France. They are:

Singapore: M Ravi – IBA Human Rights Award

M Ravi has received the 2023 IBA Award for Outstanding Contribution by a Legal Practitioner to Human Rights, for his extraordinary dedication to defending human rights and advocating for the decriminalisation of homosexuality and the abolition of the death penalty in the Republic of Singapore. He is a founding member of the Anti-Death Penalty Asia Network and the Singapore Anti-Death Penalty Campaign’s community group. Over the course of his career, he has worked to save more than 40 inmates from death row. Read more.

Argentina: María Fernanda Mierez – IBA Pro Bono Award

María Fernanda Mierez is the recipient of the International Bar Association (IBA) Pro Bono Award for 2023 for her 20-year dedication to pro bono legal work, including the co-founding of a pro bono programme within law firm Beccar Varela and the establishment of structures such as the Young Lawyers Pro Bono Network in Argentina, which aims to encourage a new generation of practitioners to get involved with legal aid. Philippines: Raphael Lorenzo Aguiling Pangalangan – IBA Outstanding Young Lawyer Award

Raphael Lorenzo Aguiling Pangalangan of the Republic of the Philippines is the recipient of the 2023 International Bar Association (IBA) Annual Outstanding Young Lawyer Award for his unwavering dedication to human rights and criminal justice through advocacy and academia. With the Center for International Law, he has represented victims of the Philippine drug war before domestic courts, foreign sanctions regimes and international mechanisms. Read more.
