The Oil and Gas Law Committee focuses on issues such as: exploration and production of hydrocarbons, onshore and offshore oil and gas, joint Operating Agreements and industry contracts, financing and insurance, comparative tax regimes, state participation and national oil companies, trans-national pipelines, storage, and refining, sales and shipping agreements, alternative dispute resolutions, licensing, PSA, and other regimes, downstream issues, oil and gas trade and marketing, natural gas transportation and distribution, LNG chain and hydrocarbon regulatory bodies and agencies.

The Future is Form: AIEN and IBA Launch Joint Collaboration on New Model Clauses for a Successful Energy Transition

The Association of International Energy Negotiators (AIEN) and the International Bar Association’s Oil and Gas Law Committee (IBA-OGC) announce the launch of the joint project to develop Energy Transition Model Clauses.

The project will deliver model clauses that will be standard contractual provisions the oil and gas industry can rely on to implement their emissions reductions and decarbonization goals and that will help enable an energy transition that is timely, just, sustainable, and efficient.

This article summarises highlights from the ‘Climate change: implications of the International Court of Justice and Inter-American Court of Human Rights advisory opinions for corporations’ webinar which took place on 9 October 2025. Algeria Bid Round 2024: a strategic shift under the new Algerian hydrocarbon law

On 14 October 2024, Algeria launched its first upstream licensing round in a decade – Algeria Bid Round 2024 – under the new Hydrocarbon Law No. 19–13, marking a significant milestone in the country’s upstream oil and gas sector. This article examines the core features of the new legal and regulatory framework introduced by Law No. 19-13, including the new contractual models and fiscal incentives, and provides an overview of the bid round process launched by ALNAFT. It highlights key legal, procedural and commercial aspects relevant to international investors considering participation in Algeria’s renewed upstream sector.

The short to medium-term outlook of Ghana’s oil and gas industry considering: government policy, existing legislation, and scheduled or anticipated legislation

The discovery of significant hydrocarbon reserves in 2007 heralded a new era for Ghana’s economic fabric. As the oil and gas industry wove its narrative into Ghana’s development story, there is a need to understand the intertwined dynamics of government policy, existing legislation, and potential legislative shifts. This article delves deep into the short-to-medium term landscape of the oil and gas industry and concludes with insights into an aim to secure a sustainable future for Ghana’s oil and gas industry.

The effect of the energy transition on the oil and gas industry in Ghana

Ghana is heavily reliant on its hydrocarbon resources for generating income. While there is continuing demand for energy resources, there is also a call for reductions in emissions and the petroleum sector is under pressure to clarify how energy transitions will affect its activities and organisational frameworks, as well as explain the ways in which it can contribute to mitigating greenhouse gas emissions. This transition to renewable sources has an impact on the petroleum market in Ghana as the landscape for oil and gas companies has profoundly shifted due to the countries and international organisations establishing climate change obligations. The effect of the transition is however yet to be greatly felt within the jurisdiction as hydrocarbons remain a major focus.

Scholarships

The IBA Section on Energy, Environment, Natural Resources and Infrastructure Law (SEERIL) normally offers a scholarship each year for a young lawyer, who would not normally be able to owing to financial constraints, to attend the IBA Annual Conference. Scholarship details are available here.

The IBA SEERIL, together with its Academic Advisory Group (AAG), are delighted to announce that they are again accepting applications from students requiring funding for advanced studies or research in the fields of energy and natural resources law. The scholarships and research grants, up to a total of £18,000 a year, and is open to students at any institution where at least one member of the faculty is an IBA/SEERIL member.
