Roland Kempfle
Biography
Judge Roland Kempfle has extensive international experience. In addition to his German law degrees, he also graduated as a Master of Laws with distinction at Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand. Since he joined the judiciary in 2009, he has had different positions in criminal law and civil law, first as a public prosecutor, then as a judge in first and second instance. Throughout his career, he conducted legal trainings in various fields of law as a trainer and spoke on conferences in Europe, Latin America, Asia and Africa. From 2019 until 2025, he served as a Member of the Board of the German Association of Judges and Prosecutors (Deutscher Richterbund, DRB). In this function, he represented the DRB internationally, e. g. at the European Network of Councils for the Judiciary (ENCJ), the Global Judicial Integrity Network of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), the International Association of Judges (IAJ) and the European Association of Judges (EAJ). In 2023, Judge Roland Kempfle was elected Vice President of the IAJ. The IAJ is a professional, non-political, international organisation, bringing together national associations of judges. The main aim of the IAJ is to safeguard the independence of the judiciary as an essential requirement of the judicial function to guarantee human rights and freedom. The organization currently encompasses 93 such national associations or representative groups of judges from five continents.
