Biography

The Honourable Mr Justice McAlinden is a High Court Judge in Northern Ireland, having been sworn into office on 15 June 2018. Mr Justice McAlinden was educated at St MacNissi’s College, Garron Tower, County Antrim, and studied law at Queen’s University Belfast, graduating in 1985. He was called to the Bar of Northern Ireland in 1986 and called to the Bar of Ireland in 1996. In 2011, he took silk and became Queen’s Counsel (QC). In 2014 Mr Justice McAlinden was elected Chairman of the Bar Council of Northern Ireland, serving for two years. He was made a Bencher of the Inn of Court in Northern Ireland in 2017. Following his swearing in as a High Court Judge he was appointed to the role of President of the Victims' Payments Board in Northern Ireland. He is also chair of the shadow Civil Justice Council in Northern Ireland. He is presently the senior Judicial Review Judge in Northern Ireland.
