This article discusses changes to ‘marine land’ taxes in Brazil, which may provide an opportunity to private owners for savings in future taxes as well as a possible increase in the value of these types of properties.
Covid-19 focused the attention of many bars on the need to update their technological capability to accommodate more virtual and remote programming, meetings and conferences, among other things. While some had made strides towards that, others were faced with the need to adapt immediately. With the general end of the pandemic and lockdowns, it became apparent that various aspects of the new accommodations should not be abandoned, and a return to “business as usual” was not optimum. This interactive program addresses how bars are adapting post-Covid to retain certain structures that proved advantageous, and what lessons have been learned.

The International Bar Association’s Human Rights Institute (IBAHRI) condemns the possible imposition of the death penalty by Saudi Arabian authorities against Murtaja Qureiris, who was just 13 years old at the time of his arrest in 2014.
As part of the IBA presidential task force on artificial intelligence, the Bar Issues Commission is tasked with reviewing the impact on regulatory and ethical rules regarding lawyers. Several jurisdictions have already issued guidelines and best practice commentaries relating to the professional conduct of lawyers. The panel will provide a cross section of comparative responses by bars and regulatory authorities to artificial intelligence, and feature speakers from across the spectrum of IBA entities involved with the task force. The session will be interactive so that attendees may also provide input on their bar activities.

In a December 2024 ruling, the Court of Appeal of Luxembourg decided whether a person convicted of a criminal offence could demand the press to stop publishing their name and image in relation to a past case. This case illustrates the challenge of balancing two fundamental rights: freedom of expression and press, versus the protection of reputation and right to privacy. The plaintiff, a person in a public position, was involved in a widely covered legal case many years ago. Despite the time passed, media coverage continued including reports with identifying details about the individual.

On 11 September Brazil’s Supreme Court convicted former president Jair Bolsonaro of plotting a coup, sentencing him to 27 years and three months in prison. After hearing more than 70 witnesses, the court found the former Brazilian leader and seven of his allies guilty on multiple counts of conspiring to overthrow the government in January 2023 after losing the 2022 election to Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
The IBA Guidelines on conflicts of interest in international arbitration have been a great success since their inception in 2004. In line with the tradition to revise the Guidelines every 10 years, an updated version has been published in 2024. The overall structure of the Guidelines has not changed, including the well-known traffic-light system of red, orange and green lists, which has become a worldwide norm. Nonetheless, the 2024 guidelines innovate in many respects. A group of experts will discuss the revision process, the changes made – as well as those discussed but eventually not retained. The panel will reflect on the continued usefulness of the Guidelines for international arbitrations around the globe.

Metaverse is growing exponentially with increasing support from investors and business entities. The South African Competition Act 1998 has from the outset reflected a clear focus on both competition law and public interest issues, the latter including provisions to enhance small business and overcome historical discrimination wrought by apartheid.
