All is fair in love, war and trade? What is “fair trade” in legal services?

Committee(s)

Bar Issues Commission (Lead)
Bar Issues Commission Policy Committee
Bar Issues Commission Regulation Committee

Description

President Trump has challenged the long established economic paradigm of multilateral free trade, advocating reciprocity and bilateral trade deals in its place. Whilst it is easy to see how this philosophy applies to tariffs and quotas on wheat, steel and cars, how this plays out through trade in legal services is less clear. This session will look at what constitutes ‘fair trade’ for the legal sector. We will explore perceptions around trade imbalances in legal services and the concerns to which they give rise. We will also consider whether Bar Associations should be advocating for legal services to be covered in bilateral free trade agreements and if so, what should be in them. Expect a heady cocktail of discussion about Trump, Brexit, post-colonial economics and whether or not globalisation is irreversible.”
