Thomas Stouten

Biography

Thomas specialises in international arbitration under the auspices of the ICC, LCIA, SIAC, DIAC, UNCITRAL, ICSID, UNUM, and NAI and also court litigation, including post-arbitration litigation (both in the Netherlands and on the Dutch Carribbean). He has extensive experience in complex disputes, often with multi-jurisdictional aspects, covering a broad range of issues arising from both commercial and corporate transactions. Because of his international law practice, Thomas also worked in both the New York and London offices of Houthoff from where he coordinated multi-jurisdictional disputes. Thomas is a member of the ICC International Court of Arbitration in Paris. He is also a member of the ICC Task Force on Addressing Issues of Corruption in International Arbitration. Thomas is an officer of the IBA Arbitration Committee in which he Co-chairs of the Recognition and Enforcement of Arbitral Awards Subcommittee. He also sits as an arbitrator. He gives lectures regarding arbitration and frequently speaks at arbitration conferences. Thomas publishes in the Journal of International Arbitration, the Dutch Journal on Arbitration, the Dutch Journal on Property Law, Arbitration World (5th and 6th edition), the Dispute Resolution Journal of the AAA/ICDR, Dutch Rules of Evidence on Civil Law for the Legal Practice and also the Handbook on Third-Party Funding in International Arbitration. Thomas is recommended as 'razor-sharp', ‘highly persuasive, both in writing and orally', ‘eager, very responsive’ and ‘great in hearings’ in the Legal 500 Arbitration Section, in which guide Houthoff's arbitration team is ranked Tier 1 as 'superb' and ‘praised highly for its 'deep experience' and 'combination of being strong in local as well as international counsel roles’. Also Thomas is recommended as arbitration counsel in the Chambers Global rankings. Thomas is also recognised as one of the Future Leaders in the Netherlands in both Who's Who Legal: Litigation and Global Arbitration Review & Who’s Who Legal: Arbitration, in view of his capability in post-arbitration litigation and arbitration.
