7th Mergers and Acquisitions in the Technology Sector Conference
The LGBTQI+ Law Committee tracks advancements and setbacks in various areas, including discrimination, criminalisation, family rights, recognition and status, identity, among others, and considers the legal implications of cultural and socio-economic issues related to LGBTQI+ interests.
The Committee aims to promote diversity and inclusiveness in the legal profession and society at large by presenting LGBTQI+ ideals and calling attention to legal matters and developments through its sessions, publications, projects and collaborations with other IBA committees, and external parties. The Committee welcomes LGBTQI+ individuals, and all allies and encourages all persons interested in our projects to join the Committee.

An employee’s gender can play a crucial role during their employment period and the entitlements arising from it. Austrian law so far has only known a binary gender (female and male) system. In 2018, the Austrian Constitutional Court ruled that a person can have different genders other than female or male. Thus, as a result of Constitutional Court case law, a third gender was introduced into the Austrian legal system. The following article discusses the effects this ruling has on current Austrian employment law related to the gender of the employee.
The main areas are patents, trade marks, copyright, trade secrets and unfair competition. Allied to these are a number of related areas including data protection, database protection, privacy, design rights, domain names and the like.
In the entertainment law area the key focus is on the creation, provision and delivery of content in relation to print, films, broadcasts, cable programmes, musical works and sound recordings. There is also involvement with media law including defamation and privacy and authors' rights in a more general sense.
Temporary protection of foreign nationals
The Committee addresses, among others, issues as diverse as sustainable development, biodiversity, air, water, groundwater and waste regulation, climate change, safety in the workplace, protection of endangered species, food safety, environment and trade.

Coming forward with information that could get someone into trouble has never been easy. To remedy this, states have been increasing their efforts to encourage whistleblowers to report wrongdoings by ensuring their protection from retaliation,1 which, up until recently, has been scarcely regulated, particularly in the European Union.2 The need to enhance the protection of whistleblowers has been thrown into the spotlight as a result of a series of scandals (such as the Panama Papers,3 Cambridge Analytica and Danske Bank scandals) in which whistleblowers played a key role.
As these technologies become more prevalent, regulators and unions are stepping in to protect consumers and artists from potential misuse.

The Cambodian government has introduced new legislation in an attempt to provide a legal identity to the thousands of people in the country who currently lack proof they even exist. The law includes a focus on civil registration – the process of recording births, deaths, marriages and divorces – and is set to be implemented from July 2024. It’ll tackle the issues created where a person doesn’t have a legal identity – for example, limits to their access to public services, human rights and social protections.

IBA Anti-Corruption Committee Asia Conference
The Business Human Rights (BHR) Committee creates awareness of business and human rights and broader corporate sustainability principles. Preventing and addressing business-related human rights risks is key to ethical business, good governance and increasingly legal compliance for businesses including law firms.
The UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, as the core international standard, provide guidance on governments’ duty to protect against human rights harm by business; business’ responsibility to respect human rights; and access to remedy for business-related human rights harm.
The BHR Committee promotes legal skills to advise clients in this area and facilitates dialogue among lawyers to support evolution.
The International Bar Association’s Human Rights Institute (IBAHRI) welcomes the renewal of the United Nations Independent Expert (IE) on sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI). Created in 2016 for an initial period of 3 years, this mandate was set up to respond to a specific pattern of violations directed against persons because of their SOGI.
The International Franchising Committee focuses on the law and business of international franchising. Committee interests include: competition law principles, cross-border sales and licensing issues, the business forms employed and trademark and intellectual property protections required to assure franchising success.
The Committee has served and continues to play an educational role for the legal profession, judiciary and legislators, and enables members to examine and comment upon legislative and regulatory proposals affecting international franchising. The data protection officer plays a crucial role in ensuring the compliance with data protection laws, transparency requirements and effective data protection practices within organisations subject to the Brazilian General Data Protection Law (Lei Geral de Proteção de Dados or LGPD). Acting as a communication bridge between the data controller, data subjects, and the National Data Protection Authority, the DPO plays an essential role in overseeing the protection of personal data. Key aspects of the role include the fulfilment of the formal designation process, attainment of the required qualifications and the need to prevent conflicts of interest.

The mission of the Committee is to address issues of particular interest to start ups, owner-managed, closely held and family businesses and their legal advisors, and to organisations with ambitions for growth. The Committee's aim is to provide a focus for the different needs of ownership, management and financing of such organisations. In Pakistan, intellectual property rights (IPRs) are safeguarded through a legal system which aims to protect and advance innovation, investment and creativity. Patents, trademarks, copyrights and industrial designs are some of the domains covered by the Pakistani IPRs regime. This article will highlight the methods of protection in terms of IPRs in Pakistan and will discuss the procedures relating to disputes related to the infringement of such rights.
In recent years, EU member states have implemented comprehensive whistleblower protection laws under the EU Directive, while the US Department of Justice has strengthened its rewards framework through a new pilot programme. Japan has also moved to enhance protections, following its 2020 reforms to the Whistleblower Protection Act with a further amendment in June 2025 aimed at expanding coverage and reinforcing safeguards.
