A novel approach to lawmaking has enabled a Texas abortion ban to evade judicial scrutiny despite concerns about its constitutionality.
The Pro Bono Committee promotes pro bono legal services globally, through the IBA Pro Bono Declaration, the exchange of information and initiatives, and by promoting best practices.
Pro bono work supports access to justice where this right is not fully supported by legal aid. The Committee provides resources, including digital content and articles highlighting pro bono efforts by legal professionals, which can be found below.
The Committee is committed to advancing pro bono work across the profession and welcomes new members passionate about contributing to this mission.

In February 2021, Texas’s power crisis became a major issue. From the discussions by experts and officials, it could be attributed to extreme weather conditions, exceptional electricity demand, a non-weather-resistant energy system, poor predictive planning, Texas’s laissez-faire energy market and its independent grid.
Join this session to learn about a planned update to the International Bar Association pro bono declaration and an accompanying guide to support pro bono practice. This will include a focus on defining pro bono and the avoidance of marketing or business promotion being classified as pro bono work.

IBA Annual Conference Paris 2023
The Class Actions Committee serves as a platform for lawyers to discuss differing class action and collective redress regimes, monitor international developments, and debate key policy and rule of law issues. Class actions are becoming increasingly common, providing access to justice and holding corporations and authorities accountable.
Jurisdictions vary widely in their approaches, with some countries facing fundamental challenges. Global coordination in prosecuting and defending major cases is growing, with fostering collaboration and knowledge-sharing being vital. The Committee provides a forum for international lawyers to come together and discuss these differences, as well as network with other professionals within this space.

The Immigration and Nationality Law Committee is concerned with all aspects of immigration and nationality law on a worldwide basis, including business-related immigration, family reunion policies, refugees and compassionate cases.
The Committee aims to provide a forum for the discussion of comparative data on immigration and nationality policies of countries worldwide.
The mission and focus of the committee is to provide a platform for lawyers practising immigration laws to receive input and update about the immigration laws of their country and also immigration laws and procedures of other jurisdictions. We achieve this by holding annual conferences and presentation of papers, newsletters and providing other online resources to enhance the knowledge of its member in multiple jurisdictions.

This article reflects on growing pro bono practice in Ireland, highlighting recent policy initiatives including hiring of pro bono associates, changes requiring lawyers involved in government framework agreements for legal services to undertake pro bono work, and a Pro Bono Pledge. Ongoing pro bono initiatives are also featured, including additional support during Covid-19.

What role does pro bono play in African countries in providing free legal services to the poor and underserved? Are law firms the dominant providers of pro bono legal services, or are they trailing behind the services provided by state-sponsored and non-governmental mechanisms; and if so, what are the reasons? For the first time in the history of the IBA, the Pro Bono Committee has undertaken a survey of the state of pro bono on the African continent, with a particular emphasis on the African IBA membership.
